Wisdom Teeth Update

So I definitely spoke too soon about my wisdom teeth.  On Saturday, there was a lot of swelling, however nothing that Joey and I considered to be "abnormal".  On Sunday, the swelling was getting worse and not better which was a cause of concern for me, so I called the doctor and he called me in an antibiotic.  Well, I woke up Monday morning, and the swelling was even worse, my glands were swollen, my temple was swollen, and my eye was beginning to turn black and blue.  I set up an appointment for that day, and went in with expectations of some stronger medicine, but nothing too serious.  I was wrong.  He said I had developed an infection on the right side of my mouth, he cut it open (without numbing it) and let all of the mess drain out.  I have never felt pain like that in my life.  It took all I could do to not kick him at some points during the procedure.  After he got some of the mess out, he informed me that I needed to come in on Tuesday morning, and that he would probably sedate me to open it up some more, and then I might have to be admitted to the hospital.  I was by myself because we hadn't expected anything to come of the appointment and after hearing this I completely broke down.  The top wisdom teeth were supposed to be a "piece of cake", not an infection, being put back under sedation, and admitted to the hospital.  I called my mom and an hour later she was on her way to Birmingham.

The good news is, the story gets much better after this.  The doctor called me in stronger antibiotics and pain meds, because the old ones weren't working anymore.  I woke up Tuesday with less swelling, but about the same amount of pain, went to the doctor again that morning, and he said it was improving and that I didn't have to be sedated or admitted to the hospital.  Went back again Wednesday, and again it was improving but not at the rate he wanted it to, so he told me to take it easy for the rest of the week.  By Saturday I was pretty much back to normal, with the exception of only being able to open my mouth wide enough to get a Dora the Explorer toothbrush in instead of the normal sized ones, which also limited my diet.

So that is my wisdom teeth experience, thank God we only have 4 and I'll never have to go through that again.  He told me he had never seen an infection like that on the top teeth, and only saw them on the bottom teeth like once every six months.  After speaking with the nurses today, they said they couldn't believe he didn't send me to the hospital on Monday, but I'm glad he didn't.  I'll take the comfort of my bed and my mom nursing me back to health over a hospital bed and some strange nurse any day!

  1. Ugh, imagining your pain is a real bummer! I hope that it didn't last too long for ya. It's not fun when the discomfort is like that during recovery. Indeed, it's fortunate that we only have four wisdom teeth!

  2. Wow. Your recovery was incredibly fast! It's great news that you weren't admitted to the hospital. A wisdom teeth experience can be really gruesome, but you made it through. =)
