Connecticut Trip

A couple months ago, we decided it was about time that we went to Connecticut to visit family. We had not been since I was pregnant with Caleb. Although we were terrified of traveling with two children, Joey's cousins were inspiration because they had already made the trip from Connecticut to Huntsville twice with their twins who are younger than Caleb. We were not really worried about Charlotte since she is not mobile yet, but were mostly worried about Caleb. He ended up doing better than expected. Yes there were times that he kicked the seat in front of him, or was loud, or hyper, but those were kept to a minimum.

On the way there, our flight was delayed from Birmingham to Chicago because of air traffic troubles in Chicago (their air traffic control center was deliberately set on fire by someone a few days earlier), so our connection in Chicago to Connecticut that was supposed to be almost two hours, was only 30 minutes. We were running through the airport with two kids and it was stressful, but we made the plane!

We got to Connecticut late Saturday afternoon, and went straight to our home base to watch the Auburn game! The next morning, we had all of the family in Connecticut join us for a potluck lunch. Caleb had a lot of fun playing with his cousins, and it was great seeing everyone! You can imagine the feast we had with so many Italians and Giesens. I would be 1000 pounds if I lived up there!

On Monday, we went to the Connecticut Zoo. They are partners with the Birmingham Zoo so we got in free with our annual passes!

On Tuesday, we went apple and pear picking at Averill Farm. It was so beautiful and Caleb had such a fun time! They also had these delicious apple cider doughnuts and we got two dozen to go. I probably had a dozen over the span of the week ... I'm telling you I really would be 1000 pounds.

Caleb ate the entire apple, core and all!

 He loved the pear too!

Charlotte rolled around in the cart and was a perfect angel the whole time (shocker)!

The farm was on the outskirts of Washington Depot, Connecticut, which is the town that Stars Hollow was based after for you Gilmore Girl fans. I didn't know this when I was researching which orchard to go to, but it would have definitely influenced my decision had I known beforehand. We had lunch in the town square and it was so cute, and the picture perfect town that I imagine when I think of New England.
On Wednesday, we relaxed for most of the day before going to Joey's grandmother's for dinner that night.
Sweet babies relaxing and watching cartoons together!
On Thursday, we took a drive to Newport, Rhode Island with Joey's cousin Megan, her husband Dan, and their precious little boy, Keegan. It was such a nice town, with (again) good food!
We went to an arcade and Caleb had a blast (and got some crappy toys with all the tickets we won).

We also went to The Breakers, a mansion built by the Vanderbilt family. There are a lot of mansions in Newport, and they are all so beautiful.
We then went on the cliff walk to see the rocky beaches.

On Friday, we relaxed for the morning before Joey, Mrs. Angela, and Caleb went to a corn patch with Megan and her family. Charlotte and I stayed behind because she had a cough and I didn't want to get her out in the weather again, but we got lots of pictures of the fun times they were having!

We headed back home on Saturday, and were unfortunately able to watch the Auburn game on the plane. I could have done without the loss, but Caleb and Charlotte were great travelers once again. We had a wonderful trip and hopefully it won't be three years before we are back again!
